Tips for Back-to- School when your Child has Asthma and Allergies

It’s that time of the year again, children of all ages are preparing to go back to school. Children are not the only individuals preparing, many parents of allergic children are preparing too. The back-to- school season is a time of high pollen and mold levels, and exposure to both (and additional) allergens and viruses at school can take a large toll on children’s health. Urticaria (Hives)

Urticaria is the medical term for hives. Urticaria usually appears as red bumps or round welts on the skin. They may be associated with episodes of lip, tongue, or face swelling, called angioedema. Treatment of chronic urticaria can be frustrating at times for both the patient and the clinician because even a combination of several different medications may only lessen the severity or frequency of hives, but not lead to complete resolution. Allergic fungal sinusitis is prevalent in the southwestern U.S., with Phoenix, AZ a “hot spot” for the disease. As many of our patients know, the Allergy Asthma Clinic has been involved in research on allergic fungal sinusitis for a number of years, publishing work on both diagnosis and treatment.
